Reflection on Illini Art Therapy Association Team Experience
My freshman year, I was involved in a student organization called Illini Art Therapy Association (IATA). It encourages students to celebrate their unique self and be aware of different social issues by making art.
I facilitated two workshops as part of my involvement in the organization. One workshop, titled True Happiness, we encouraged students to pursue what they truly love, regardless of what society values. The other one, Gender Stereotype, we encouraged students to be brave and embrace who they are, and we brought up the notion that personalities belong to all human beings, regardless of gender.
Before the workshops, I set up materials and tables for about 25 participants. At the beginning of the workshop, I led a stretching exercise for the group, which helped participants feel more relaxed prior to the session. Then, I disseminated the printed prompts and explained the topic and goals of the workshop, letting the participants start to create their art work using the supplies provided by IATA. In the end, I facilitated sharing of members’ works and initiated discussion on personal reflection about making the art.
In my sophomore year, I also served as the social chair for the organization. I managed the organization’s Facebook page by posting events’ information and pictures taken from workshops. I also planned social and bonding events for board members as well as group members to make a more cohesive group.
Through the activities I did in IATA, I have become a stronger and more confident person. Also, the inclusive atmosphere of art sharing in the organization has taught me to be understanding and embrace differences among people. My leadership experience within the organization also strengthens my belief that it is important for a leader to create a comfortable and open- space for their group, because this can help the group form cohesion and work more effectively and efficiently together.
